Have you ever wanted to make your own windmill or did you just wonder what all went into it. There is not that much to it, if you are familiar with solar power the principle is pretty much the same except your using the wind for energy. A windmill usually contains the following components.
You obviously must have the blades which can number from four to 20. If you see those windmill farms with the giant windmills, they may have three blades. You must have the tower which will hold the blades up in the wind. There is a shaft which joins the blades and the tower and is for the rotation of the blades.
There are factors to be considered in the design of the windmill. It is important to know which way the wind blows most of the time in your area. You can be sure the wind will not always blow the same direction so it would be good to know the other possible directions the normal winds blow.
You need to consider any obstructions you may have that will impede the flow of wind to your windmill. You need to consider installing the windmill in an area with the least wind blockage.
Many times the best wind flow is located above the ground. Knowing this height will aid in knowing how high to install your blades for the best performance.
Knowing all of the above information would really help you in getting the most out of your windmill performance. You do not want your blades sitting idle for lack of wind so make sure they are installed in the best location you have.
